Believed 19,900 Miles from new
First introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show, the 190SL sat as a more affordable alternative to the legendary 300SL. Although the cars shared the design style, the 190SL featured a monocoque platform based on that of the sedan, as opposed to its bigger brother's more complex and expensive tubular spaceframe chassis.
Whilst the 300SL came with straight-six with state-of-the-art mechanical fuel injection, power for the 190SL came from an inline 4-cylinder engine, fitted with pair of Solex carburettors driving through a sweet four speed gearbox. With 120hp on tap, performance was for more than enough, and it can happily keep up with even today's traffic.
This particular car was first registered on the 18th April 1962, and supplied new to Mrs Walpole in Chertsey, Surrey. This very rare UK-Supplied matching numbers Right-Hand-Drive 190SL is one of just 562 produced for the world RHD market, with around 250 believed to still be existence today.
Finished in its original colour scheme of DB608 Ivory with a Red Leather interior and fitted with a new black soft top as per the data card. A fantastic period colour which looks as great today, as it back in 1962!
Fresh from a near three year restoration, the car, needless to say, presents beautifully. The paintwork is in exceptional condition and is unmarked. All exterior chromework looks stunning and all glass and light lenses are optically perfect. The doors open and close with a wonderfully reassuring click. Such is the case with a low mileage car, with original mechanisms that aren’t tired and worn out.
The interior is a wonderful place to sit, with great cushioning from the soft red leather seats. The inside features all period correct stitching and patterns on the seats and door cards. All interior chrome is in great condition. The cabin is nicely topped off by the ever wonderful square weave carpets in red that fit wonderfully. Fitted with the correct Michelin ZX tyres, including a new an unused spare, with unmarked hubcaps and wheel trims, the car drives well.
The engine bay presents itself beautifully with great paintwork and factory correct detailing, with all correct hoses and clips used throughout. The bonnet, original to the car, features its body number stamping. Mechanically rebuilt, the matching numbers engine fitted with its restored and correct Solex carburettors runs very well, pulling strongly.
The car was taken off the road in the late 70’s, before a nut and bolt restoration was started in late 2015. With an MOT in 1975 showing its mileage at just 19,777 miles, along with the lack of wear inside the engine when rebuilt, it is believed that the current mileage of 19,917 to be perfectly correct.
This presents a wonderful opportunity to purchase a home market 190SL in fantastic condition, it’s a very usable car, that would be proud to show off or would represent a great addition to any classic collection.
